Initial Announcement Date:
Consideration: not disclosed
Google acquires Picnik, an online photo editing and sharing service across platforms such as Facebook, Photobucket, Flickr, and Picassa. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Google plans to continue supporting all existing Picnik partners. The Picnik team joined Google and will work with Picasa, Google’s web photo sharing service.
The extent to which Picnik interoperates with competitor services such as Yahoo Mail and Facebook remains questionable under Google’s management.
Picnik plans to utilize Google's data storage and processing capabilities to improve the site and its marketing support.
January 2012 -- Google plans to shutter Picnik, although the rationale is not completely clear. Most like the move is in line with Google's "more wood behind fewer arrows strategy." The Picnik website states: "Picnik is moving its easy yet powerful photo editing tools to Google+” Google may have concluded that the service is more a feature than stand-alone destination.
