Deal Facts

Initial Announcement Date: 10/12

Consideration: $30-45M (Source: TechCrunch)

Google/Motorola Mobility acquried Viewdle, a developer of image and gesture recognition technology. The technology can be used to tag photos.

Strategic Implications

Viewdle’s technology complimented Google’s existing photo sharing and viewing services. It would allow users of Google+, Android and Picasa to easily or automatically tag photos of friends. Facebook had already made a play in this space by acquiring Face.com, which had developed an auto-tagging app called Photo Tagger. Acquiring Viewdle allowed Google to keep pace with Facebook’s photo management technology and add facial recognition features to its suite of photo-related products
