Google acquires Katango, which develops technology to analyze friend lists to generate related people so that users could better segment their social networks. The Katango team will be working with Google+.

Strategic Implications

Curiously, Katango was an early investment of the sFund, a $250 million fund to back social innovation. Although the fund is managed by Kleiner Perkins Facebook provides guidance to the fund and is an investor. Katango application was capable of sorting and organizing social contacts by life stage or activity using Facebook data.

Hence, in buying Katango, Google acquired a company with ties to Facebook.
