Google confirms that it acquired WIMM Labs in 2012. WIMM developed wearable technology, including an Android-powered smartwatch before closing down its operations in 2012. The WIMM One was a smartwatch powered by Android 2.1 for developers.
Google may be developing its own smartwatch, having filed patents in the area in 2011. In any case, purchasing WIMM Labs may support its development of version of Android designed for wrist-mounted wearables to provide to OEMs in the tune with Google's traditional business model.
September 2013 -- Google names the next version of Android "KitKat", after striking a licensing agreement with Nestle, maker of the popular chocolate candy. TechCrunch speculates that KitKat may be used to power a smartwatch.
